Just updating the WLA links and adding in the Lexitronics Scribd account at: http://www.scribd.com/lexitronics

This gives direct access to all the work published by Lexitronics on Scribd, including Nilgun’s Phd Thesis (1497 reads) and the more recent description of how the online WLA course at http://lexitronics.org was put together - (over 300 words in its first week!). We should say that from our experience Scribd is to be highly recommended as both a source and home for academic work and research that is slightly off the beaten track, or still in draft form, or – like a thesis – not often circulated widely in its full form.

To take the example of Nilgun’s thesis, nine hard copies had to be printed, bound, and circulated as appropriate – at great expense to both pocket and planet. And in the old days that would have been that and the work would have been left to gather dust from then on. Not any more though.

The Write Like an Academic online course has been developed from over ten years of teaching academic writing to postgraduate students in both classroom and flexible modes. Basically the course is a corpus-informed self-access programme that guides the user through all the different sections of the classical thesis or article. The course approach is very much based on the belief that by making learners corpus-informed, we also lay the foundation for learner autonomy. And this indeed is surely where most academic writers and researchers want to be – freed from the need for extra and often expensive language courses.
